Position Title: INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE – SPECIAL EDUCATION

 

Responsible to: Building Principal/Director of Special Education

 

Basic Function: To assist in implementation of the services defined in the Individual Education Program and in providing a learning environment in which students will benefit from specially designed instruction, modification, and accommodation as evidenced by progress in the general curriculum.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

  1.   Regular and punctual attendance.  
  1. Perform clerical duties as directed by the teacher.  
  1. Under the guidance of the certified teacher, prepare for classroom activities, delivery of specially designed instruction and assist in the implementation of adaptations/modifications to the general curriculum to meet the needs of individual students per the IEP.
  1. Assist the teacher in gathering and recording student progress data.
  1. Perform administration of medication and other health services such as tube feeding and catheterization, as instructed by a health professional.   
  1. Under the supervision of the certified teacher, assist students with self-care, including diapering, toileting, bathing, dressing 
  1. Assist students across settings including the resource room, regular classroom, the building and the community.
  1. Maintain a patient attitude when assisting students in stressful situations.
  1. Assist with students who have challenges with mobility.  This would include lifting, positioning and moving the child from place to place for the proper use of gross motor equipment, such as standers and to and from a wheelchair, changing table, bed, on and off a bus, etc…
  1. Assist therapists (e.g. PT, OT, Speech, etc...) in following up with therapy as instructed in consultation with the therapist and under the direction of the supervising teacher per the IEP.
  1. Assist the teacher in providing consistency in services and instruction and in implementing the students’ IEP behavior related goals, including behavior support and management plans.
  1. Assist in management of the students’ behavior when they are exhibiting inappropriate and/or physically forceful behaviors.  This may include assisting students who are at risk of harming themselves or others through implementation of Safe Crisis Management.
  1. Adhere to professional ethics and standards, which include maintaining the strictest confidentiality concerning students, including their performance, conduct, activities, remarks or personal information.  Refer all parent requests for information regarding their child to the teacher.
  1. Function as a cooperative team member and take responsibility for fostering and maintaining good working relationships throughout the building.
  1. Other tasks that may be assigned by the supervising teacher or Principal.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of board policy for classified personnel.
